This instrument adopts a binocular prism telescope system, and a corresponding dry Ringman smoke concentration map is made on the telescope reticleGray scale step blocks of levels 1-5, with the fully transparent part being level 0. The observer compares the smoke target with the gray scale step block of that level through the left eyepiece of the telescope to determine the standard level of smoke blackness.
