Zinc sulfide is a white to grayish white or light yellow powder. The visible light becomes darker. Stable in dry air, gradually oxidizes to zinc sulfate when exposed to humid air or moisture. Soluble in dilute inorganic acids, soluble in alkali, insoluble in water. Seeing the sunlight darken in color. Long term exposure to humid air transforms into zinc sulfate. It is generally obtained by the reaction of hydrogen sulfide and zinc salt solution. If trace amounts of Cu, Mn, Ag are added as activators in crystalline ZnS, different colors of fluorescence can be emitted after illumination. Used as analytical reagent, coating, paint preparation, white and opaque glass, filling rubber, plastic, and for preparing fluorescent powder.
