This method is applicable for the determination of volatile phenols in drinking water, surface water, groundwater, and industrial wastewater, with a determination range of 0.002-6mg/L. When the concentration of volatile phenols in the water sample is below 0.5mg/L and above 0.5mg/L, direct spectrophotometry can be used. Oxidants, oils, sulfides, organic or inorganic reducing substances, and aromatic amines in water samples can interfere with the determination of volatile phenols.

In a solution containing excess bromine (produced by potassium bromate and potassium bromide), phenol reacts with bromine to form tribromophenol, which further generates bromo tribromophenol. The remaining bromine reacts with potassium iodide to release free iodine. At the same time, bromotriphromophenol also reacts with potassium iodide to displace free iodine. Titrate the released free iodine with a standard solution of sodium thiosulfate, and calculate the volatile phenol content calculated as phenol based on its consumption.
