The so-called chemical oxygen demand (COD) refers to the amount of oxidant consumed when treating water samples with a certain strong oxidant under certain conditions. It is an indicator of the amount of reducing substances in water.

The reducing substances in water include various organic compounds, nitrites, sulfides, ferrous salts, etc. But the main thing is organic matter. Therefore, chemical oxygen demand (COD) is often used as an indicator to measure the content of organic matter in water.
The determination of chemical oxygen demand (COD) varies depending on the reducing substances in the water sample and the measurement method used. Currently, the commonly used method is the acid potassium permanganate oxidation methodpotassium dichromateOxidation method.

The determination of COD using potassium permanganate as an oxidant is called the potassium permanganate index, also known as CODMN; The determination of COD using potassium dichromate as an oxidant is called the potassium dichromate index, also known as CODCR.

1、 Overview of CODCR Online Analyzer

This instrument is suitable for online automatic continuous monitoring of wastewater with chemical oxygen consumption in the range of 10-1000mg/L and chloride concentration below 1000mg/L.

two、 Codcr measurement principle
The sample, potassium dichromate digestion solution, silver sulfate solution (silver sulfate as a catalyst can more effectively oxidize linear fatty compounds), and concentrated sulfuric acid mixture are heated to 165 ℃. Potassium dichromate is reduced to trivalent chromium by organic matter in water. The trivalent chromium content is measured at a specific wavelength, and the mass concentration of oxygen consumed is calculated based on the amount of trivalent chromium ions consumed (the amount of dichromate ions consumed corresponds to the amount of oxidizable organic matter) to calculate the COD value. Reducing inorganic substances such as nitrite, sulfide, and ferrous ions can improve measurement results, and their oxygen consumption will be added to the COD value. The interference of chloride ions can be eliminated by adding mercuric sulfate, as chloride ions can form very stable mercuric chloride with mercury ions.
